How Lucky We Are

Friday, January 27th, 2012

Today is one of those days that makes it impossible NOT to count your blessings. The sun is shining, the trees are flocked in a soft blanket of pure white and the snow is like COLD SMOKE.

We’ve had 6 inches of fresh snow in the last 36 hours and more than two feet of new snow this week. (That’s on top of 50″ last week…)

While I always feel fortunate to work and play at Brundage Mountain, I met some out-of-town visitors this week who helped remind me of just how lucky we are. (more…)

Winter has made an incredible comeback in the past two weeks. Here at Brundage Mountain, we’re riding a long winning streak of powder days (check out our photo gallery), and that translates into an exciting backcountry bounty, as well.

With 5-6 feet of new snow on the peaks beyond Brundage Mountain, our 19,000 acre backcountry Snow Cat program is ready to roll. Our first trip of the season heads out tomorrow. (more…)

The Day After…

Tuesday, January 24th, 2012

The morning dawns and the sun comes up, warm memories of the previous day’s bountiful powder wells up in us.  If only we could relive the powder day….at Brundage we do, even the day after the storm. (more…)

Wow. Today was one of those days that is so good, it’s hard to find the words. We had 7″ of fresh, fluffy, heavenly, dreamy hero snow.

No matter what line you picked, it seemed you were destined to float effortlessly downhill on a pillow of freedom.

It’s one of those mid-week powder days that left plenty of good turns for everyone even into the afternoon hours.

It also inspired our Top 5 list for today. (more…)

The Whole Story

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

It’s the seventh day of a week that saw us measuring our snowfall with a yard stick rather than a ruler.

So the idea of a mere 3 inches of fresh snow didn’t really seem that exciting.

But snow totals don’t tell the whole story on a day like today.

We started out with two inches of fresh, fluffy snow this morning. Again, not an impressive total nowadays. (more…)

The Perfect Storm

Saturday, January 21st, 2012

Excitement was in the air from the very beginning today, as we enjoyed our first real weekend powder day of the season.

For many, it was the first chance to hit the slopes after a full week of hearing about the FOUR AND A HALF FEET of snowfall that’s blanketed our mountain this week.

Normally, news of nine inches of fresh snow in 24 hours would be ample enticement for weekend crowds.

Add to that a no-show December, bright and sunny weather for the first two weeks of January, and then, four feet of snow in four days and you’ve got hundreds of hungry skiers and riders ready for their first powder day of the season. (more…)

Safety Week – Snow Smart Safety IQ Quiz

Friday, January 20th, 2012

Be Snowsmart : Play it Safe Campaign for the 2011/2012 season by the National Ski Patrol has introduced an interactive  Snowsmart Safety IQ  Quiz.  I just took the quiz and I found it to be a good reminder of some snow safety basics.  It would be a good activity for Parents to do with their kids to teach them the basics of snow sport safety.   Those who successfully pass the short, fun, and interactive quiz are entered into a quarterly drawing for prizes donated by the NSP (National Ski Patrol) sponsors.  Here is the link the NSP Snowsmart Quiz.   Good Luck!

THREE Feet and Counting…

Thursday, January 19th, 2012

As snow continues to drop from the sky at a rate of about an inch an hour, it’s all we can do to keep up with the deepening powder.

In the base area, that means endless plowing of parking lots and shoveling of stairs and walkways.

On the slopes, it means endless, bottomless powder turns all over the mountain.

On the steepest slopes, those endless, bottomless turns are also effortless. (more…)

TWO FEET and Counting…

Wednesday, January 18th, 2012

Yesterday, we celebrated our first bonafide powder day of the season.

Today, Mother Nature decided to double down and put that to shame by dumping another 16 inches of fresh snow on our beloved mountain.

Slopes were soft and powdery from top to bottom and powderhounds showed up in force to enjoy this gift from above.
